How close to the cliff edge is your horse???

Where are your horse/s situated on the "Laminitis Paddock" that sits atop the the cliff?  Are they ready to fall off? Are they halfway?  Or just inside the gate and miles away from the edge?

With winter upon us, now is really a good time to assess your horses body condition.  There are many reasons a horse gets laminitis - but body condition has a HUGE share of the reasons.  Think 80/20 rule..   Overweight horses get the lions share of inflammation.

Winter grasses tend to be lower in sugars as they slow growth down to minimal values.  So if the weather isnt warm and trying to act like autumn then the grass isnt moving either.  More hay and straw enter the system and you have a perfect scenario to lower inflammation in your horse.

So go on!!!   Assess your horses weight!!  Or get your trimmer to do it.  Or a friend to do it.  Google has heaps of printable body condition scoring images.  Print one out and start today.

And then when spring arrives you could already moved away from the cliff edge and ready for the new riding season where movement will assist in getting you further still away from falling off that edge.

The further away you are from the cliff edge the healthier the horse is.

The added bonus of that is - if you 'slip up'  in the feeding, less movement - or if the horse needs to be confined for whatever reason- you are already so far away from the 'virtual edge' you can afford to move closer with less repercussions to your horses health than if you were already at the supposed cliff drop off point.
